Traditional Chinese Medicine: The Path to zen
In the bustling modern world of beauty and wellness, there’s a timeless tradition that has been nurturing holistic health for millennia and their is something to be said about it: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). As passionate advocates for holistic beauty and wellness, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of TCM in harmonising the body, mind, and spirit. Today, I’d like to share with you the essence of TCM, some of the top herbs, renowned teas, and daily rituals that can guide you towards a life of lots of zen, balance, and profound stillness. Even if it’s just for a majority of the time.
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
An ancient system of health and wellness that has been practiced in China for over 2,500 years. It encompasses a wide range of therapies, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, cupping therapy, and qigong. Rooted in the philosophy of Taoism, TCM believes in the interconnectedness of the universe and the human body. It emphasises the balance of Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, and the flow of Qi (life energy) as fundamental to health and well-being.
Some of the top herbs in TCM
Astragalus (Huang Qi): A potent immune booster, Astragalus is often used to enhance energy and support the body’s natural ability to heal.
Reishi Mushroom (Ling Zhi): One of our daily favourites. Considered one of the top herbs in the Taoist tradition, Reishi is known as the “Mushroom of Immortality.” It calms and balances the spirit, supports the immune system, and promotes longevity. If you’re craving a deep sleep, this is it! Say goodbye to insomnia and hello to restful slumber.
It’s one of those special herbs that works on all Three Treasures (Jing, Qi, and Shen) and harmonises with all five Taoist organ systems. Reishi strengthens the Heart, Kidneys, Lungs, and Liver.
In China, Reishi is known as ‘ling zhi’, which translates to ‘spirit plant’ or ‘tree of life mushroom.’ The Chinese character for ling zhi is composed of three characters representing a shaman praying for rain. The Latin name, Ganoderma, combines ‘gano’ (shiny) with ‘derma’ (skin).
Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi): A berry that benefits the skin, Schisandra is a powerful adaptogen that helps the body resist stress and balances the nervous system.
Angelica Root (Dang Gui): Often referred to as the “female ginseng,” this herb nourishes the blood, promoting a radiant complexion and healthy hair.
You will be intuitively guided towards what you feel your body needs by being drawn to what feels right. Start, flow and see how you go.
Popular Teas in TCM:
Green Tea (Lu Cha): The most popular in the world and for good reason. Rich in antioxidants, green tea detoxifies the body, aids digestion, and enhances metabolism.
Jasmine Tea: Our favourite! A fragrant blend of green tea leaves and jasmine flowers, this tea calms the mind and uplifts the spirit.
Oolong Tea: A semi-fermented tea, Oolong is known for its weight management properties and its ability to improve skin complexion.
Daily Rituals for a Life of Zen and Balance:
Morning Meditation: Start your day with a 10-minute meditation, focusing on your breath. This practice centres the mind and sets a peaceful tone for the day. Something everyone can do with.
Qigong or Tai Chi: Engage in these ancient Chinese practices that combine movement, breathing, and meditation. They enhance the flow of Qi, promoting physical and emotional balance.
Mindful Eating: Savour each bite, appreciating the flavours and textures. This practice not only aids digestion but also fosters a deep sense of gratitude. Intentional and Intuitive eating will always flow better throughout your system.
Evening Reflection: Before bedtime, reflect on the day’s events, acknowledging your achievements and setting intentions for the next day. A daily prayer for yourself and others is always a powerful healing practice.
In the pursuit of beauty and wellness, TCM offers a holistic approach that goes beyond the surface. It teaches us the art of stillness, contentment, and flowing with the natural rhythms of life.
